Overview

The ARK helps Chicagoland Jews faced with adversity to navigate toward self-reliance. Based in Chicago, with a satellite location in Northbrook, IL, ARK professionals, volunteers and donors provide free, comprehensive services within a framework of Jewish values and laws. The ARK’s comprehensive services include social services, a health and dental clinic, food pantry, intensive day program, post hospitalization support, spiritual enrichment, transitional residence, employment services and more. Embarking on a new chapter of growth in its 50th year, The ARK is expanding its current headquarters to make the facility more physically accessible, functional and secure.

The ARK is seeking an accomplished Director of Development (DOD) to lead its $4M+ annual fundraising program, to include strategy development, prospect identification, donor stewardship and engagement, and major gift development. The Director of Development will also be charged with overseeing the successful achievement of revenue targets for The ARK’s $15M capital campaign, as well as long term legacy and endowment initiatives. The DOD reports to and collaborates closely with the Chief Executive Officer and oversees a team of four, including a Development Manager, Development Associate, Development Assistant, and Foundations and Grants Manager. The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of relevant nonprofit fundraising experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create an annual fundraising plan outlining financial targets, strategies, tactics roles and timelines; prepare and regularly update campaign dashboards
  • Build and implement individualized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans for annual, capital, and endowment major gift prospects and donors
  • Develop The ARK’s donor recognition and prospect identification programs
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of special events, including the Dinnerless Dinner; develop remote or online event options as needed
  • Work closely with the Board of Trustees and Board of Directors to support fundraising goals and develop a close working partnership
  • Manage The ARK’s Capital Campaign Committee; assist in the recruitment and training of committee members
  • Serve as the primary liaison for all capital campaign volunteers, programs and activities; manage the capital campaign calendar, communications, cultivation and stewardship events
  • Prepare strategy memos, major gift proposals, newsletters, and presentation materials; oversee all direct response efforts
  • Oversee The ARK’s grants management program, ensuring deadlines are met, funder relationships are developed, and new grant opportunities are pursued
  • Oversee the routine updating of donor profiles; record all donor touchpoints and progress notes in the donor database management system
  • Raise the visibility and public awareness of The ARK through community engagement and outreach opportunities

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • 10+ years professional fundraising experience
  • Experience and comfort working with high-level donors and philanthropists
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong public speaking and presentation abilities
  • Skilled at developing relationships with lay leadership and donors and motivating volunteers
  • Proven ability to secure major gifts of $10,000+
  • Effective, motivational supervisory skills with the ability to lead in a team-oriented setting
  • Passion for The ARK’s mission and ability to promote and communicate the mission and organizational impact to internal and external stakeholders
  • Project management expertise; ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Chicago Jewish philanthropic community and Jewish customs
  • Goal-oriented and data-driven with strong follow-through
  • High level of comfort working with business technology, experience with Salesforce preferred
